Type of Character: Canon

Personality:

In his younger life, Bucky was the brash one, the outgoing one. He loved women, and thought it his purpose in life to love all of them. Equally. He loves them all. Young, old… he doesn’t mind. He still has some of that, but it is very tamed, trained out of him thanks to HYDRA.

The other thing about Bucky is that he’s loyal. He’s loyal all the way to the end of the road, and sometimes beyond it. He knows his friends, and does not hesitate to follow them where the road might lead. This is shown in Infinity War, when the Wakandans appear with a new arm for him, and he asks where the fight is. He doesn’t hesitate at all.

Bucky, for seventy years, was the Fist of HYDRA. He has come to terms with that. Not that he doesn’t still have nightmares - he does - but they are tempered by the fact that he is no longer that person. He does not have to be a killer. He can choose his own path now, thanks to Shuri and T’Challa.

But, there is a reluctance to Bucky. A reluctance to rejoin the world, knowing what he has done. It’s eased, somewhat, by knowing that he has done a justice to the world, by trying to fight Thanos’s people. He also knows that he cannot make up for what he has done, and wants to stay out of the limelight, lest he reflect badly on his best friend.

That’s the thing. He does have a best friend. It was Steve who broke through HYDRA’s programming in ClevelandDC to send Bucky on the run from the world. It was Steve that finally found him in Bucharest, because of course it was. They know, knew each other inside out and not even HYDRA’s brainwashing could destroy that.

Bucky has lost some of his joie de vivre. He has. Not because of the world, but because of what he has done in it. He’s become much more reclusive, and enjoys his time with the rhinos and the farming in Wakanda. He doesn’t speak much, because he doesn’t need to. He’ll still try to charm a lady, but his heart isn’t in it. It’s something that HYDRA took from him.

Now, however, with the threat to the world, Bucky has stepped up. The Wakandans are his family, his friends, and he will die for them, just as he would for any of the Avengers.

When he stepped out of the ice in Wakanda, he started looking toward the future. He can no longer look at the past and hate himself for what has happened. Oh, he still hates himself for not breaking the programming earlier, but he understands that a lot of things were done to him, rather than by him. He knows that the past is no longer for him. The future is where he needs to be.

He remembers, he remembers them all. He told that to Stark. He remembers… the raccoon. Saying he was going to get the arm. He remembers seeing Steve and then. Well, where the hell is here? “Is this hell?” He says it aloud, just testing his voice. Nope, he still sounds like himself. Well, that’s something at least.

Keeping a grip on his rifle, he pushes himself up. His body works, and that’s important. The metal arm is still attached. Had Thanos snapped him somewhere? Were the others going to be here too? He hoped not. They needed to get him back.

“What the hell is this place?” He asks no one in particular. He doesn’t get an answer, which is good, because if he had, he would probably have shot someone.

Slinging the rifle up on his shoulder, he starts walking, finding himself soon on a beach. “Well, shit.” This isn’t Wakanda. Bucky scrubs his flesh hand over his face, wondering what to do now.

He knows Wakanda, better than any white man. He’s lived there over a year now, and often goes walking to see to things around him. He knows that T’Challa keeps an eye on him with the beads on his wrist. It’s fine. He knows that it is necessary.

“Well, now what do I do?” He looks around and then freezes. He’s been careless, there are other people converging on him. He turns, and raises his hands. “I’m going to put this on the ground, and no one is going to shoot anyone.” He slowly puts the machine gun down. Now, he waits.
